About The Final Turn

A professional retirement and aftercare program for Thoroughbreds leaving the racetrack — a dignified home for life, or a responsible path to the next one, built around care, transparency, and accountable governance.

What we do, and why it matters.

At The Final Turn, our mission is built on a lifetime of devotion and respect for the horse. Guided by over 20 years of hands-on horsemanship — shaped by invaluable years working alongside legendary Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas — we provide a safe, deeply personal, and professional environment for retirement and next-home care off the track.

Every athlete that steps into our barn is treated with the specialized attention they have earned. Some of the best veterinarians in the region look after our horses — whether something needs attention or it is simply a routine health check, in clinic or on a farm visit. By working side by side with trusted, racetrack-affiliated veterinarians who continue to provide top-tier routine care on our farm today, we make sure every horse steps into its next chapter surrounded by familiar expertise and dedication.

We operate from a 10-stall facility at Blue Skies Horse Farm in Goshen, Oldham County, Kentucky — perfectly positioned to stay deeply connected to the horsemen we serve at the Kentucky racetracks, which are often the "meeting point" for horses shipping in from anywhere across the country.

The Final Turn is intentionally structured as a professional retirement and aftercare program, not a traditional "rescue." Whether a horse is letting down from the track on the way to a second career or settling into a peaceful, permanent home with us, they receive elite-level daily care. By collaborating directly with trainers, owners, and other talented horsemen and women, as well as our aftercare partners, we ensure every Thoroughbred leaves the track with a documented plan and a proven next step — or a dignified, lifelong home.

"Every year the need for more aftercare programs like The Final Turn becomes more obvious. What I've enjoyed most about the way our farm has operated for several years is seeing hot-headed Thoroughbreds spend time here after a lifetime on the racetrack and grow into the perfect horse for another discipline of riding. We've had horses move on to be great show horses, pony horses, or just wonderful pleasure horses. It's really amazing, the transformation that happens when they're given the special touch that comes from Danielle and her system."

What happens when racing is over?

Every Thoroughbred's racing career ends. What comes after depends on someone being ready to take responsibility for the rest of the story.

🏡

Permanent Retirement

Some horses' racing days are simply done. For them, The Final Turn is the last stop in the best sense — a stall, a herd, and daily care for the rest of their lives.

🌿

Letting Down From the Track

Horses coming out of race training need time to let down — a quieter routine, different feeding, turnout, and new social dynamics — before they're ready for whatever comes next.

🤝

Responsible Next Homes

Not every horse has a home waiting. We coordinate with retraining partners, adoption programs, and responsible owners so that when a horse leaves us, it's to a documented, appropriate next step.

🐎

Daily Professional Care

Feeding, stall care, turnout, handling, farrier visits, and routine veterinary coordination — every day, for every horse, no exceptions.

📊

Documentation & Records

We keep records of care, vet visits, farrier work, and outcomes — the backbone of donor transparency, grant reporting, and future TAA accreditation.

🏛️

Accountable Governance

The Final Turn is a Kentucky nonprofit corporation with an independent founding board, conflict-of-interest policies, and transparent financial management.

The people behind the care.

She is the first person our horses see in the morning, the last to check on them at night, and the voice behind the care updates we share with supporters.

As Treasurer, Eric oversees the organization's financial records and reports to the board at every regular meeting. His focus is making sure every dollar entrusted to The Final Turn is tracked, documented, and spent where it matters most: on the care of the horses.

Jasmin Walters

Independent Director

Jasmin helps connect The Final Turn with the owners, trainers, and aftercare partners who make responsible transitions off the track possible — the relationships that bring horses to our barn and find them their next homes.

A majority of our board is independent. Under our bylaws, most directors must receive no compensation from The Final Turn and hold no financial interest in any entity doing business with it. Related-party matters are decided by the independent directors alone, with the interested party fully recused and the recusal recorded in the minutes.

Blue Skies Horse Farm, Goshen, Kentucky

The Final Turn leases the entire 10-stall barn at Blue Skies Horse Farm in Goshen, Oldham County, Kentucky, for the exclusive use of our program — every horse in the barn is one of ours.

The facility includes individual stalls, an aisle barn, pasture turnout areas, and the infrastructure needed for professional horse care. Located in Kentucky's horse country, it provides easy access for the veterinarians, farriers, and equine professionals who support our horses.

The barn is monitored around the clock, and the property is private — no public through traffic, no passers-by. For a horse that has just come off the racetrack, that quiet matters. It is a large part of what we mean by a safe home for the stretch ahead.
